We describe in this paper a distributed model and the techniques we used for implementing such a simulation on a cluster of workstations. The need in adapted methodologies in this area is a recurrent problem. Simulation times obtained do not allow developping effective prediction tools. Realistic large-scale simulations are obtained to the detriment of precision and simulation time. This is due to the physical models increasing complexity which is in constant opposition with the available computing resources. We show that an OpenMOSIX cluster could form a basis for a good distributed engine, easily adaptable for spatial model in large-scale simulations.

Fire Spreading Simulation in Large Buildings Based on Cellular Automata
The buildings fire safety is currently an important subject for researchers and practitioners due to probable incidents that can happen inside industrial plants, large public buildings or transport facilities: fires, explosions, toxic releases, etc. Even minor events can seriously endanger life, goods and environment. Particularly, fire spreading in large buildings represents a major threat tha...
متن کاملMachine Learning Approach to Tuning Distributed Operating System Load Balancing Algorithms
This work concerns the use of machine learning techniques (genetic algorithms) to optimize load balancing policies in the openMosix distributed operating system. Parameters/alternative algorithms in the openMosix kernel were dynamically altered/selected based on the results of a genetic algorithm fitness function. In this fashion optimal parameter settings and algorithms choices were sought for...
متن کاملLoad Balancing Experiments in openMOSIX
This work concerns the study of load balancing in the openMosix distributed operating system. The openMosix kernel was augmented with the means to gather performance data related to the operation of its load balancing policies. A performance baseline was established via a number of tests. The load balancing information exchange algorithm was modified in various ways. This study focuses on attem...
متن کاملDistributed Forest Fire Monitoring Using Wireless Sensor Networks
Disaster management is one of the most relevant application fields of wireless sensor networks. In this application, the role of the sensor network usually consists in obtaining a representation or a model of a physical phenomenon spreading through the affected area. In this work we focus on forest fire fighting operations, proposing three fully distributed ways for approximating the actual sha...
